If you are looking for easy crafts for kids this Canvas Magnet Craft is going to be perfect! Simple, easy and a practical craft since its a magnet!
This activity is easy to do, works great for kids of all ages and comes together rather quickly! Easy crafts for kids is what it’s all about when doing art with toddlers, haha!
I am all about easy crafts and activities around here! Check out one of my favorite easy kids “toys” here-it’s actually a craft item!
We have made these canvas magnets for grandparent gifts, fathers day gifts and simply for our own fridge!
What You Need
- Flat Small Canvas
- Paint/Markers
- Craft Sealing Spray
- Magnets
I list what I exactly use in the detailed list below!
Flat Small Canvas
You will want to find a canvas that is flat on the back for easy magnet placement. A normal small canvas with a wood frame could be used but will stick out a good amount on a fridge (if that is where it is going!) so keep that in mind.
We got the ones used below as a pack of three from Dollar Tree! They are 4 by 6 canvas.
Paint/Markers
You could use anything you want here! Normal paint, crayons, markers ect.
Favorites for younger children: Paint Markers and Paint Sticks.
We used paint markers in this activity because my daughter recently was sent some from her Grandma. They are easy to use and have more of that fun “painting” feel over a normal marker.
I think paint sticks would be perfect for this as well! I love how easy they are to use and how fast they dry. When doing anything with toddlers, fast drying is a huge perk!
The great thing about both options above is that they don’t mix much into each other like normal paint does. Especially the paint sticks! They dry in 90 seconds!
This means that you aren’t left with a brown craft project (like what often happens with liquid paint and toddlers) but something with distinct colors still!
Craft Sealer Spray
If you are wanting to make your project last I highly suggest using a craft spray to seal your project together!
Especially when using more washable products (a plus with small kiddos) you will want to seal the project well.
The craft spray that I am using is this product in the picture above, Plaid Clear Acrylic Sealer from Patricia Nimocks! Any clear sealer will do the job well. Easy to use and perfect for lots of different products. I’ve used the same bottle for quite some time now.
Magnets
I used a sticker magnet roll here. With buying a roll like this you are able to cut to size and usually a roll will have enough to last for many projects!Â
There are a few options you could use here too though! Buying round magnets is a great option to simply hot glue to the back.
How To Make
Simply Paint on the Canvas whatever you would like! Since I was making ours with toddlers-scribbles it is. 🙂
Designs are easy to make using painters tape! Or use stickers to make it really easy.
Using Painters Tape
Add painters tape to either a blank canvas or over a painted dry canvas. Using the paint sticks here is so handy because of how fast they dry!
Use the tape to either make striped designs or cut out your own design!
To cut out your own design first make a painter tape “canvas” of such to work with first. Simply lay painters tape down overlapping to create a large tape block.
Draw your design and carefully cut it out like a sticker! Be careful to touch the back as little as possible so that it stays sticky. Add it to either a blank or fully dried canvas.
Make sure when painting to paint over the painters tape fully so that the image/lines fully appear!
Once you have painted over the sticker of tape allow the paint to dry then peel off!
In this one we made a sticker of the word “Dad.” The one year old moved it around a little bit so the paint bleed slightly.
Which is totally fine by the way!
Remember it’s a craft made by kids. It should look like they made it because they did!
We simply added a marker outline around the word Dad and rolled with it. 🙂
Here in the picture below you can see we painted just the area under the two hearts, added our heart sticker, let the kiddos paint and then peeled them off so that the heart shown through! We used paint sticks on these grandma gifts!
Spray the Project
Once your canvas is painted and dried add anything else you may want!
In these I used a permanent marker to add some words and extra embellishments.
Then spray your canas with a craft sprayer (in a well ventilated area!) and allow it to dry.
Add your magnets to the back and you are done!
Get Crafting!
This easy craft for kids makes a great gift for anyone in your child’s life!
For younger kiddos add a painted handprint or footprint. Something truly that all ages can “make” for their loved ones.
We are always looking for ways to save our kids artwork in a way that is easy and meaningful. This craft hits the spot!
