An Ultimate Toddler Toy-Pom Poms!

April 25, 2022 · In: Kids

Pom Poms are one of the ultimate toddler toys-and they are not even a real toy! But with all the different ways you can use them and the price they are hard to beat!

They are truly toddler magic.

When playing with poms it’s great to have a lot of different colors and sizes. That way they become more versatile to use.

The Mini Muffin Tin is perfect for sorting poms!

Learn why poms are such a great “toy” to use with your toddlers and how to play with them!

Why are Poms as a Toy so Great?

We love poms in our house for so many different reasons! I find myself pulling them out all the time to use in different ways. My favorite things about them?

  • It’s all about the imagination! Toys that let your toddler be creative with their play are so important and poms are perfect for this.
  • They are cheap! So so cheap. If they get lost, dirty or too old I just toss them with zero thought.
  • Very easy to make educational. We talk about the colors, the different sizes and make rainbows. We sort them in different ways and group them by type. So easy to add in while playing.
  • So versatile. Like I said, I pull the poms out all the time. Ideas of how to play with them below!
  • Safe. With them being soft I don’t have to worry about people or things getting hurt. When my youngest was smaller I simply removed the smaller ones and we only played with the big poms that he could not fit in his mouth.

How to Play with Them and Activities

  • Sorting
    • Have your toddler put them together based on color or size!
    • My kids love putting them into muffin tins. The mini muffin tins work great for holding and sorting poms. My old year old loves getting every spot filled over and over again.
  • Cooking
    • Give them a bowl and spoon to use with the poms. Suddenly the poms become whatever your toddler wants to cook up! My two-year-old loves to make “Pom Soup!”Toddler "Cooking" with moms
    • We also pull out the plates and silverware from our kitchen play things to use.
  • With a Salad Spinner
    • Put the poms into the salad spinner (another favorite “toy” around here” and let your toddler spin them up!
    • As a plus, it allows your kids to practice their coordination in order to spin the spinner correctly.
  • Snowball fight
    • The bigger poms are perfect to use as pretend snowballs! With how small and soft they are, it’s safe to have an indoor snowball fight!
  • Basketball
    • Use a bowl or bucket to make a basketball hoop to play with!
    • Make it educational and try having them only throw in one color at a time.
  • Easter-Egg Hunt
    • Hide poms around a room or your house and send your kids off on a hunt to find all the poms!
  • Make it Rain
    • Gather them all up and throw them into the air to make it rain poms.
    • Little faces when colorful fluff balls are falling from the sky are the best!
  • Play Catch
    • Perfect for teaching little ones how to catch and throw
  • In Art Project
    • Use in their typical way!
  • However your toddler wants to use them! Kids are incredible and it’s always fun to see the different ways that they use things without any help for us!

On a Christmas Tree as ornaments!

One year, when our oldest was almost two, we used poms as our Christmas tree ornaments! We wanted ornaments that were safe for her, fun on a treat and that she could participate with. Poms were perfect! Decorating and redecorating the tree was an activity for weeks!
